Chelsea’s Champions League squad: Summer signing misses out on 23-player group named by Enzo Maresca KIK BALL

Head coach Enzo Maresca makes a shock selection in his 23-player Chelsea squad for the Champions League, as well as omitting a summer signing.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has named a Champions League squad that has featured one shock selection and an even bigger glaring omission.

The Blues are preparing for their return to a competition that they won in 2021, last week’s League Phase draw handing them an array of high-profile and difficult fixtures.

Having successfully complied with an agreement with UEFA regarding making a profit during the summer transfer window, Chelsea have been able to select their squad freely.

However, that has not stopped Maresca choosing to leave out new signing Facundo Buonanotte, who has arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion on loan.

At the same time, Levi Colwill – who has been ruled out until the back end of the season at the earliest – has been selected in the 23-player squad, not including players eligible for the ‘B’ list.

Any more surprises?

Liam Delap also keeps his place in the squad despite the likelihood being that he will not recover from a hamstring injury until the back end of October.

There are no other surprises with Tyrique George – who missed out on a transfer to Fulham on deadline day – able to be included on the ‘B’ list

As such, Chelsea have 26 players to select from, with a goalkeeper from the academy in line to be third choice when Gabriel Slonina has not been selected.

Axel Disasi and Raheem Sterling are also excluded having missed out on transfers to other clubs.

A trip to Bayern Munich for a fixture at the Allianz Arena on September 17 represents Chelsea’s first of eight League Phase games.
