Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games KIK BALL
Bayer Leverkusen confirm reports that they have sacked former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after just three matches.
Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that they have sacked head coach Erik ten Hag after just three matches.
On the back of his stint with Manchester United coming to an end in October 2024, Ten Hag took his time before accepting his next job.
However, despite the upheaval at the BayArena throughout the summer, the Dutchman has been afforded no time to make an impact.
Leverkusen have collected just one point from their opening two fixtures in the Bundesliga, letting leads slip in both of them.
After losing 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim on the opening week of the campaign, Ten Hag watched his Leverkusen side, that had a player advantage at the time, let slip a 3-1 lead at Werder Bremen to draw 3-3 on away territory.
In the aftermath of that capitulation, it was widely reported that discussions were taking place regarding the 55-year-old’s future.
Leverkusen announce Ten Hag sacking
On Monday morning, Leverkusen officials confirmed that they had parted ways with Ten Hag, two club chiefs giving their reasoning for his departure.
Simon Rolfes, who is the managing director of sport, said: “This decision was not an easy one for us. Nobody wanted to take this step.
“However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this setup is not feasible. We firmly believe in the quality of our team and will now do everything we can to take the next steps in our development with a new setup.”
Meanwhile, CEO Fernando Carro said: “A parting of ways at this early stage of the season is painful, but we felt it was necessary.
“We remain committed to achieving our goals for the season – and to do that, we need the best possible conditions at all levels and across the entire first team. Now it’s a matter of fully implementing and utilising these conditions again.”
For the foreseeable future, Leverkusen training will be overseen by the current backroom staff ahead of the club making a permanent appointment.
Ten Hag’s only victory as Leverkusen boss was a 4-0 victory away at fourth-tier side SG in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
