Manchester United transfer news: Courtois gives his take on new Red Devils goalkeeper Lammens KIK BALL

Following the struggles of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, Manchester United may have finally found their solution between the sticks. The Red Devils secured the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day, spending €21m (£18.3m) to bring him to Old Trafford.

According to Thibaut Courtois, the transfer could prove pivotal. The Real Madrid and Belgium number one praised the 23-year-old in a conversation with United legend Rio Ferdinand, describing Lammens as “an immense talent.”

“He told me about Lammens because he’s a Belgian player, and he was just giving me an idea of what he’s like. He told me that he is a huge talent—obviously inexperienced yet—but he thinks his style will fit well in the Premier League.

It’s a recommendation from Thibaut Courtois, one of the three best goalkeepers in the world, so I’m going to accept it,” Ferdinand said.

Despite Courtois’s endorsement, Ferdinand voiced concerns about whether Lammens will be given the time and space to reach his potential at a club where short-term results are paramount.

“I keep hearing people talk about talent and so on, but the problem is: can Manchester United afford to wait for this talent to mature right now? That’s the question.”

Who is Senne Lammens?

A product of Club Brugge’s youth academy, Lammens moved to Royal Antwerp in July 2023 and had a standout 2024-25 campaign. He made 44 appearances, conceding 56 goals while keeping 10 clean sheets. Notably, he made more saves (127) than any other goalkeeper in the Jupiler Pro League and registered the highest save percentage (81.4%) in the competition.

Tall, agile, and known for his penalty-saving ability, Lammens has been compared to Courtois by Frank Boeckx, former goalkeeping coach at Anderlecht.

“He still has another year or two to develop (…) I wouldn’t rule out that, after some time, he could reach the level Courtois is at now. His saves are outstanding, and so is his positioning. He’s superb with both short and long passes, whether with his right or left foot.

Standing at 1.93m, he’s got great height. Excellent reflexes, and solid in one-on-one situations,” Boeckx told La Dernière Heure.

Lammens has represented Belgium at every youth level and received his first senior call-up in March 2025, although he has not been included in the current squad for the September international break.

Will Lammens be United’s new number one?

Despite his age and limited top-level experience, Lammens could be handed his debut sooner rather than later. Manchester United’s goalkeeping position remains uncertain heading into the rest of the season.

Andre Onana came under fire for a disastrous showing against Grimsby Town in the League Cup, where United were knocked out by the fourth-tier side. The Cameroon international was blamed for a string of errors and saved just one of Grimsby’s 13 penalties in the shootout.

Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir, who started the first few matches of the season while Onana returned to fitness, made a costly mistake in United’s Premier League opener against Arsenal, which resulted in a home defeat at Old Trafford.

With the club’s first-choice options underperforming, Ruben Amorim may be tempted to throw Lammens into action immediately after the international break. United face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 14 September in Premier League round four.
