Marc Guehi latest: Oliver Glasner insists “there is no deal” with Liverpool to sign defender in transfer window KIK BALL
Liverpool are hoping to agree a deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, and Oliver Glasner issues an update ahead of transfer deadline day.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has insisted that there is no deal agreed for Marc Guehi to join Liverpool, and reiterated that the defender must stay at the club.
The Eagles emerged as 3-0 winners against Aston Villa on Sunday night, with Guehi scoring his side’s second goal of the game.
Glasner will be pleased that his team have responded well to losing Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, but losing his best defender would be a serious blow to the Londoners.
Speaking to reporters in the aftermath of Palace’s victory, the head coach made the case to keep Guehi, saying: “There is no deal. We can decide, he is our player and under contract. We can decide. It is up to us. The only one who decides if Marc has to stay is our chairman.
“Our fans deserve to have the best players available. If we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He loves Crystal Palace and the team. We have to [keep Guehi] if we want to play a successful season.”
Liverpool have made a £35m bid for the Englishman, who has just a year left on his contract and can leave the club for free at the end of the season.
Why Liverpool need Marc Guehi to join this summer
Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate was forced off against Arsenal, and though boss Arne Slot will hope that his issue is not serious, the defender has a long history of injury problems.
Joe Gomez came on in his place, and while the Englishman performed well, he has frequently been sidelined as a result of serious injuries.
The Reds did bring in Giovanni Leoni this summer from Parma, but it would be unfair to expect the 18-year-old to make much of an impact on the first team.
Virgil van Dijk needs reliable partners in defence, especially as he is 34, and the addition of Guehi would help ensure that Slot’s backline remains stable.
Could Guehi be more important than Alexander Isak?
The Reds are expected to be busy on Monday’s transfer deadline day, with a deal for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak a possibility.
Isak would likely cost in the region of £130m, and he would undoubtedly be seen as the crown jewel of the club’s business this summer.
However, given that Liverpool have already added number nine Hugo Ekitike to their squad, the signing of the Newcastle forward should arguably not be seen as much of a priority.
Guehi’s addition could be essential, as while he could help cover in case of injuries, he might be seen as the long-term replacements for one of Van Dijk or Konate.
