Preview: Truro City vs Aldershot Town – prediction, team news, lineups KIK BALL

Sports Mole previews Wednesday’s National League clash between Truro City and Aldershot Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Truro City will aim to build on their first victory of the National League season when they host Aldershot Town on Wednesday evening.

The hosts have won one and lost five of their first six league fixtures, while the visitors have won two, drawn one and lost three of their six games.

Match preview

Truro City made history in 2024-25, lifting the National League South title on goal difference to become the first club from Cornwall to achieve promotion to the National League, while they also became the first Cornish side to achieve professional status.

The Tinners were unable to continue their title-winning form throughout pre-season, losing two, drawing one and winning two of their five friendly fixtures, and they have had further struggles at the beginning of the new term.

Truro City have lost five and won only one of their opening six National League fixtures, leaving them 22nd in the table with just three points.

However, that victory came in their last league outing against expected relegation rivals Boston United, with Truro City securing a dominant 3-0 win in front of their home fans.

John Askey, in charge since June 2024, will now be hoping that his side can build on that result when they welcome Aldershot Town to their home ground on Wednesday night.

The visitors will certainly be the favourites heading into the fixture, though, as Aldershot go into Wednesday’s clash having won two and drawn one of their last three games.

That marks a significant improvement on their difficult beginning to the 2025-26 season, which saw Aldershot Town lose all of their first four matches across all competitions – three defeats in the National League and one loss in the National League Cup.

The Shots are looking to maintain their current momentum as they aim to rise back up the National League standings and challenge for promotion once again this season, especially after having suffered a dismal drop from eighth in 2023-24 to 16th last term.

Regardless of Aldershot’s mixed results, they have demonstrated their remarkable goalscoring ability this season, scoring a stunning 18 goals in six league matches – five more than next highest scorers Rochdale and Carlisle United.

The problem for Tommy Widdrington‘s men has come in defence, with only Gateshead conceding more than their 13 goals allowed, but with Truro scoring just four times this season, Aldershot should fancy themselves to win here.

Team News

Aldershot Town manager Tommy Widdrington on September 28, 2024

Truro had failed to score a goal in their first four league matches before finally netting in the 2-1 defeat to Boreham Wood, followed by their 3-0 win last time out, and Will Dean has been pivotal in attacking areas with two of their four goals.

The defender will aim to make an impact in the final third once again on Wednesday, while he will also look to limit Aldershot’s attacking unit alongside likely centre-back partner, Daniel Rooney.

As for Aldershot, Ryan Hill is their top scorer with four goals in the league, three of which have come from the penalty spot, and the midfielder is expected to start on Wednesday.

Hill could partner Dejan Tetek, Cameron Hargreaves and Maxwell Mullins in midfield, while Tristan Abrahams, Kwame Thomas and Joshua Barrett should start in attack.

Truro City possible starting lineup:

Stone; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rooney, Dean, Sanders; Bell, Taylor, En-Neyah, Law; Harvey, Pyke

Aldershot Town possible starting lineup:

Dewhurst; Clarridge, Nightingale, Meerholz; Mullins, Hargreaves, Tetek, Hill; Abrahams, Thomas, Barrett

We say: Truro City 1-3 Aldershot Town

Truro City will be boosted by their first win of the season, but Aldershot head into this one in strong form, and with their remarkable attacking record already this campaign, we expect a significant away win.
