Preview: US Open: Jannik Sinner vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime – prediction, head-to-head, tournament so far KIK BALL
Sports Mole previews Friday’s US Open semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime, including predictions, head-to-head and their tournament so far.
Fresh off another efficient display, Jannik Sinner faces giant-killer Felix Auger-Aliassime in the US Open semi-final on Friday for a spot in Sunday’s final.
The Italian No. 1 defeated countryman Lorenzo Musetti to reach the semis in Flushing for the second year running, but the top seed must be cautious of the clutch Auger-Aliassime, who has beaten three top-20 opponents in consecutive rounds to reach a second career semi-final in New York.
Match preview
Sinner was in top form under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium, defeating Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours to secure his place in the US Open semi-finals.
The defending champion’s victory means that the 24-year-old has reached the last four of every Grand Slam in 2025, and success on Friday will secure a fourth consecutive major final appearance at the sport’s biggest tournaments.
Considering last year’s run to the title in New York, beating Auger-Aliassime would guarantee the world No. 1 a fifth consecutive Slam final, underlining the Italian’s high standards and consistency on the men’s tour.
Wednesday’s triumph was also Sinner’s 26th in a row in the hard court majors, and he is aiming for a 27th straight victory to reach Sunday’s final, where Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz will be waiting.
With the players mentioned reaching the semis in the last three Majors in Paris, SW19 and Flushing, Sinner hopes to secure another win to improve his 22-5 career record in the United States and reach yet another big final.
Auger-Aliassime will have his say after a gruelling four-set victory over Alex de Minaur, winning 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5, 7-6(4) in four hours and 10 minutes.
The 25th seed’s triumph over the Demon marked his second top-10 win en route to his first US Open semi-final since 2021. Indeed, this is a significant achievement for the Canadian player, who was 1-7 against the sport’s elite prior to this year’s tournament in New York, including six consecutive losses.
By defeating Alexander Zverev and De Minaur, Auger-Aliassime has broken that run, now holding a 2-0 record against such opponents and a 3-0 record in matches against the top 15 after beating Andrey Rublev in the fourth round.
Almost every match has seen the Canadian triumph in a tie-break — one against Billy Harris, two in his round-two victory over Roman Safiullin, one against Zverev, and two against De Minaur — highlighting the 25th seed’s efficiency in clutch moments.
Facing the top seed presents a different challenge for the Canadian, but Auger-Aliassime will feel he has had good experience with pressure points during his run, while Sinner cannot underestimate the momentum gained by the 2021 semi-finalist in New York.

Cincinnati Masters (2025) – Quarter-final: Sinner 6-0 6-2
Madrid Masters (2024) – Quarter-final: Auger-Aliassime (walkover)
Cincinnati Masters (2022) – Round of 16: Auger-Aliassime 2-6 7-6(1) 6-1
Madrid Masters (2022) – Round of 16: Auger-Aliassime 6-1 6-2
Auger-Aliassime leads Sinner 2-1 in their head-to-head on the ATP Tour, although the Canadian’s victories came in Madrid and Cincinnati in 2022.
The top seed’s sole victory recently took place in Cincy, where the world No. 1 overwhelmed the world No. 27, against whom he lost just two games.
Nonetheless, having entered this year’s US Open with a 1-7 record against top-10 players, the Canadian star has now secured wins over Zverev and De Minaur and aims for a fourth by beating Sinner.
We say: Sinner to win in three sets
Auger-Aliassime’s run has been characterised by clutch play in tiebreakers and giving little away, but facing Sinner is a different challenge entirely.
Barring any physical trouble, the Italian is expected to secure another win in three sets and make history by reaching all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year.
